Yoga To Reduce Tummy After C-section

by Priyanka
(Lucknow, India)

Hello.. I am 31 year old and I have delivered a baby girl 2 years back. I had C-section. My weight before pregnancy was 58 kg and my stomach was almost flat. But after delivery, I weighed 79 kg and after 2 years, I have just lost 10 kg but no loss in the tummy size and it still looks like I am 7 months pregnant.

Please tell me what all yoga asanas and pranayam exercise can be helpful in reducing weight and specially stomach. I am worried to start the kapalbhati because of C-section.

Answer

Yoga helps to balance a person's body. Regular practice of asanas and pranayama will help to bring your body weight back to normal. Eat healthy sattvic food. It should include more of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Try to avoid sugar, artificial sweeteners and junk food.

Following asanas and pranayamas will help you to reduce weight. However, if you are new to yoga, start your practice under the guidance of an experienced yoga teacher.

1. Depending on your strength, do upto 20 rounds of Surya Namaskara (Sun Salutation). (You can start with 2-5 surya namaskars and increase the number of rounds gradually)
2. Uttanpadasana (Raised Leg Pose)
3. Naukasana (Boat Pose)
4. Shalabhasana (Locust Pose)
5. Leg Cycling
6. Leg rotation
7. Konasana
8. Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose)
9. Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)
10. Yoga Mudra (Symbol of Yoga Pose)
11. Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend Pose)
12. Ardha Matsyendrasana (Half Spinal Twist Pose)
13. Kapalabhati Pranayama
14. Agnisar Pranayama
15. Deep breathing
16. Anulom-Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

Here is a link to specific yoga exercises for weight loss.

Hope this helps.

To Reduce Weight after 2 C Sections
by: Susheela

Hello..

I am 31 year old and I have delivered a baby girl 5 years back and a baby boy 2 years back. I had 2 C-sections. My weight before pregnancy was 65 kg and my stomach was almost flat. But after delivery, I weighed 80 kg after delivering baby boy, it still looks like I am 7-8 months pregnant.

Please tell me what all yoga asanas and pranayama exercise can be helpful in reducing weight and specially stomach. I am worried to start the kapalbhati because of C-section.

Daljit's Reply
You need to start a regular yoga practice and aim to lose weight gradually. In addition to yoga, ensure disciplined eating and 45 minutes of walking. Doing kapalabhati alone is not the answer.

It is better to do yoga under guidance for reducing weight, proper relaxation and regaining your fitness. If you need further personalised advice you can contact me.

Hope it helps

C-section delivery
by: Anonymous

I had c section delivery, can i do dhanurasana after 6 month. Will it not affect my stitches?

Editors Note
Generally healing takes place by six months. You can consult your doctor in case any pain is there.

If you have done yoga before pregnancy, you can start yoga with adequate warm up and initially start with simple asanas and avoid asanas putting pressure on abdominal wall. Gradually as strength develops start dhanurasana and other asanas. Do not continue with any Asana if you feel pain or discomfort. Then seek advice..

Hope it helps

yoga

After c section from which month exercise or yoga can be done?

Editors Note
You may wait for 6 months to start a regular yoga practice. After two months you can start with walking and easy yoga like rhythmic breathing, anlom vilom, shavasana, yoga nidra and meditation. Gradually as the strength improves start with simple yoga poses which do not put pressure on abdominal wall. However, it is safer to start under guidance of a yoga teacher.

3 Weeks Post Open Myomectomy and Cystectomy
by: AJ

Hello,

I am 3 week post open myo. I am dying to get back to my daily practice, have done heated vinyasa yoga a few days per week since 2011. Prior to finding out I had a 13 cm benign tumor on my uterus I had chosen to embark on my yoga teacher training certification journey which starts in 4 days. They are very understanding regarding my limitations but needless to say I am itching to get back to my happy place practicing on my mat.
If I feel as if I am well enough to practice, can I?

Editors Note
You can take advice of your doctor too, but I think it may take up to 5-6 months for complete healing to take place.

I guess it is too early for you to start your yoga practice. You need to relax. At the most you can do yoga for healing and relaxation like shavasana, yoga nidra, rhythmic breathing or meditation. Also focus on eating healthy diet.

Your doing yoga teacher training certification at this point of time is not recommended.

Hope it helps

Yoga after cesarean
by: Ashu

I am 30 years. I had major caesarean section 6 months back. I have large cervical fibroid. My tummy looks like 4th - 5th month of pregnancy. I have pain in my back. Is yoga right for me? What asanas can I do?

Editors Note
If there is back pain, do not do yoga. Seek doctors advice or get physiotherapy, take rest and after back is healed, start yoga under guidance only.

Hope it helps

Yoga after open surgery
by: Anonymous

Hi Sir,

I am 32 years female, married, no kids yet.
I had ovarian cyst - dermoid and got it removed 8 months ago through open surgery - laprotomy.

Can I practice yoga 8 months post surgery?
I am new to yoga, also can you suggest me any poses I can do at home?
Thanks.

Editors Note
You may start yoga under guidance. Be careful about forward bending and avoid forward bending poses and pawanmuktasana initially. After you start doing forward bending poses, in case of any sign of pain in abdominal area, do not do forward bending asanas as it will put pressure on abdominal wall. Here is a link to a beginners yoga sequence.
