Clearing Bowels Before Pranayama

I am unable to clear my bowels before starting pranayama in the morning. It seems there is a problem regarding digestion. What I have to do? Can I practice Pranayama even my bowels are not cleared? Please advise me.

Answer

1. It depends on the constipation. If you are able to clear your bowels once in 24 hours, it is considered normal. It is preferable to clear your bowels in the morning before yoga asanas/ pranayama. If it is not possible, you can carry on with pranayama.

2. Preferably with regular practice your digestion and constipation will improve.

3. You can take 2-3 Tripahala tablets with warm water or milk before sleeping. Eat 2-3 pieces of 'BEL Murabba' on empty stomach once after doing yoga in the morning and once in the evening. I hope this will help to get cure from constipation.

Pranayam Steps And Clearing Bowels
by: Anonymous

Dear Sir/Mam,

I am practising "Surya Namaskar" and Pranayama in Evening. The steps I am following are :
1) I eat at 01:00 P.M in the afternoon
2) Then I start Surya Namaskar at 06:00 P.M
3) After completing Surya Namaskar, I perform Shavasana for 15 mins.
4) Thereafter I perform Bhastrika,Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom in the same order for nearly 20 mins.

Please can you tell me, if the steps are OK or I should make some changes.

Also, is it necessary to clear the bowels before doing pranayama in the evening?

Editors Note

The sequence of suryanamaskar and pranayama is ok. You may reduce the shavasana duration after suryanamaskar to 10 minutes and do 5 minutes of shavasana after doing pranayama.

It is not necessary to clear the bowels before doing pranayama in the evening, it can be any time during the day. It is preferable if you can manage to regularly clear bowels once in 24 hours period.

Hope it helps
Daljit
