Gaining Weight Through Yoga

by Aparna
(Mumbai)

Please suggest me a diet and yoga asanas for weight gain. I am 23 and weigh 40 kg. I intend to put on 10 more kgs.

Answer

Yoga philosophy supports the concept of ideal body weight. Yoga practice will regulate your metabolism to provide ideal body weight.

Although, yoga as such cannot help you to gain weight but can regulate your metabolism if it is too fast. Also yoga can help you to improve your strength and posture. One option is to gain weight by eating more calories and reducing your activity levels (sedentary lifestyle). Better option is to aim for weight gain in a healthy way by doing regular exercise well and eating high calorie nutritious diet.

Do regular yoga to reduce stress levels. Sleep more than 7-8 hours per night. If you do not find time to eat properly or adequate relaxation, slow down your life.

Eating for weight gain:

  • Eat more often, take short meals every 2 hours or so.

  • Best way to consume extra calories is to eat more fats.

  • Eat nutrient rich foods like nuts, dairy products, enough of protein, fruits, dry fruits
  • Include dairy products like whole milk, butter, cream , ghee(clarified butter) or cheese.

  • Increase carbohydrates intake from whatever source you love to eat.

  • Eat plenty of fruits especially bananas and mangoes.

  • Drink fresh fruit juices, shakes.

Aim for gradual weight gain over a
period of time.

The asanas beneficial for strength and weight gain are surya namaskar (sun salutation), bhujang asana (cobra pose), dhanur asana (bow pose), chakrasana (wheel pose), hal asana (plough pose), sarvangh asana (shoulder stand pose).

Most common Queries on Weight Gain I get a lot of queries from the site visitors about how to gain weight. Here are some additional tips to go about the issue.

Step 1. You can consult a doctor so that there is nothing wrong medically and to get advise on your weight vis a vis ideal body weight for your height and age. Do not worry if your weight is on lower side but within limits, though you may look thin.

Step 2. Do a self assessment about the following.
~ your diet
~ lifestyle
~ stress levels
~ sedentary or active lifestyle
~ exercise you do.

Step 3. Start a yoga practice of at least one hour and include up to 30 or 50 suryanamaskars. Yoga practice can strengthen your muscles and make you fit. I suggest aim for fitness more than weight gain. Yoga practice can give you the necessary strength and self confidence not to unnecessarily worry about the weight.

Step 4. You may do some weight training to gain more muscle mass.

Step 5. Be very careful with your food. Eat at fixed timings and eat only healthy food.

Hope this helps.

Need to reduce weight
by: Anonymous

I am a strong believer of yoga. I am 20 years old girl. My height is 5'1" and my weight is 68 kgs. I used to do yoga 2-3 years ago on a regular basis. That time my weight was 62 and was maintained but couldn't reduce it. Recently I had fractured my leg and because of bed rest I gained 6 kgs in 2 months. Recently I have started yoga again and want to know the right way to follow yoga in the evening as some say that doing suryanamaskar in the evening will lead to increase in weight and through yoga one can achieve more of flexibility rather than weight loss. Please let me know on this.

Also my body has become very stiff because of not doing yoga for a few years. Please help me with this issue.

Editors Note
You can continue with your practice of suryanamaskars and other yoga poses at least 6 days a week. If you take control of your diet, your yoga practice whether in the morning of evening will not lead to increase in weight. Simultaneously flexibility will increase. You can start taking triphala powder for weight loss.

Hello

I am 27 years old and want to reduce weight. Initially I started practicing surya namaskar and gained weight. Now I want to reduce it.

Editors Note
It is good to know that you could gain weight by practicing surya namaskar. Yoga practice normalises the body weight, therefore do not stop doing surya namaskars. To lose weight, carry on doing surya namaskars and reduce your food intake.

I guess you need more of rest and relaxation. Sleep deprivation can also lead to stress and weight loss. Increase the duration of your sleep by one to two hours. Continue with yoga practice and do 12-24 surya namaskars in the beginning. Practice yoga nidra daily before sleeping or at least 3-4 times a week. Eat nutritious food.

Along with doing yoga for 30 minutes in the morning, can I do sweat training exercises? If yes, then in which order should I start with yoga or strength training exercises. Please suggest.

Editors Note
If you do heavy exercises immediately after yoga, the benefits of yoga practice will be lost.
You can first do sweat training exercises, then take rest for 15-20 minutes and do yoga. Alternatively do sweat training in the evening and do yoga in the morning or vice versa.

Want to Gain Weight And Height
by: Anonymous

Hello

I am 17 years old male going to be 18 in few months. I have been underweight since childhood. My weight hardly increases in a year sometimes 2 kg sometimes its doesn't increase at all. My weight would be around 36-38 Kg because I have not checked my weight since last two yrs, So I think it should be around this because I don't feel like I have gained weight since last two years. My height is 5'3". The problem is that I hardly take dairy products like milk cheese etc and also I have not taken milk since last 3-4 yrs. I like to have butter as far as dairy products are concerned. I usually have 3 meals a day in which I eat 14 chapatis. In between I sometime have snacks. I am choosy about my food. I only eat what I like. I want want to gain weight through yoga but I am not sure because I do not take milk, butter etc. I do not eat all vegetables. So suggest me something so that I can gain weight sometimes I take curd butter during winters. I eat a lot off eggs/ omelets. Sometimes I do little exercises push ups.

I want to gain enough weight to look physically fit and no fat. Also I want to increase my height and would like to join civil services. I have started Sarvanghasana for now. Also, I get angry easily and most of the times I remain sad.

Editors Note

Here is my advice
1. Get a through checkup from a doctor to rule out any medical condition hindering your growth.
2. Consult a dietician to get a healthy diet chart as balanced and nutritious diet is essential for growth. Eating of various vegetables is necessary to get your dietary intake of vitamins and minerals.
3. In case you are underweight but otherwise feel physically fit, start with a yoga sequence consisting of various yoga asanas and pranayama. Learn yoga from a teacher. Doing of only one asana i.e sarvanghasana is not advisable. Various asanas effect on different body organs and improve health in a holistic manner.

Hope this helps

Weight Gain

Hello I am a 25 years old girl. I am not married. I want to gain some weight. Although I was very healthy and have an ideal figure but suddenly I start losing my weight. Specially my figure damaged too much. I do not know what to do. I am pretty enough but due to weight loss my beauty is getting damaged. Help me how to improve my weight?

Editors Note

Firstly you need medical advice to ascertain the cause of sudden or unexplained weight loss.

In yoga there is no direct relation between weight and beauty. Your beauty will be maintained of you are healthy, have no mental tension, eat healthy and do regular exercise. Therefore focus on all these issues holistically.

Are you doing any exercise these days? I suggest start with a regular yoga practice of at least one hour and eat as per yogic philosophy. Follow this regimen for two to three months and you may get the desired results. All the best.

About Food Adulteration
by: Rakesh Negi

Dear Sir

I am 29 year old boy, my height is 173 cm. I also want to gain weight and do use more brain. I read about other users queries and their experiences.

I hope it will be helpful for me. But you advice to all thin persons to take nutritious food, but as we now there are many adulterated food available in market. Please give me advice how can I identify adulterated food and fresh food.
My other question is how can I use my brain maximum, is it possible by meditation and yoga. Give me your advice.

Thanks
Rakesh Negi

Editors Note

There are two issues here, one is nutritious value of food and other is adulteration.

1. Nutritious food is what gives us the maximum amount of nutrition. For example fresh fruits, green vegetables, nuts, cold pressed cooking oils, milk, eggs etc. There are some foods which just provides empty calories and no nutrition for example sugar and alcohol. On the other side, the amount of nutrition obtained from processed and junk food will be accompanied by lot of preservatives, colours or taste enhancers.

2. To avoid adulteration, you have to be careful from where you are sourcing your food. Buy good quality fruits and vegetables. To completely rule out effects of pesticides, it is advisable to buy organic wherever possible. Availability and cost of the organic produce however is the real issue.

3. By regular practice of yoga asanas, pranayama and meditation, your memory and concentration will improve.

Hope this clarifies your doubt.

I am patient of ulcerative colitis. My height is 152 cm and weight is 42 kg. I really want to gain weight till 50. Will yoga help?

You can try alternative therapies like ayurveda or homeopathy in order to get a permanent cure for ulcerative colitis. You must consult a yoga teacher who can customise a yoga sequence for you. You can do all easy asanas, avoiding asanas that put pressure on abdomen. Try to do easy restorative yoga so that your body is completely relaxed.

Problems in gaining weight

Sir

I followed your previous suggestions and I did found the difference. I was able to gain weight and I gained up to 48 kg, before that I was of 43 kg.

I started practicing yoga from December and I was able to find the difference till April. But suddenly my stomach started feeling some heaviness. My digestion is perfect but still I am not able to get rid of this heaviness. I do practice suryanamaskar but I am not able to gain weight. I am a 22 year old girl of height 5.4 ft. Please help how can I get rid of it so that I could gain some some weight. I want to reach up to 55 Kg.

Editors Note

1. It is quite heartening to know that you have gained weight by yoga practice.

2. Do not worry about your weight now, deepen your yoga practice. Increase the number of surya namaskars and include other asanas and pranayama also to your yoga practice. Do yoga at slow pace and do shavasana at the end of yoga practice. Remember complete body relaxation is an integral part of yoga practice.

3. This way even though weight is not increasing your energy and fitness levels will improve considerably and with all round improvement in fitness, weight should increase.

4. Please be careful about your diet and eat strictly as per yoga diet principles. Do not eat junk, processed food that provide no nutrition. Eat some dry fruits and nuts. Eat your meals at fixed time each day.

5. Regarding heaviness in the stomach, please consult your doctor to ensure that there is no medical issue.

Hope this helps.

Underweight
by: Sachin

I am 29 years old male. I eat a lot but not gaining weight. I practice yoga daily still did not gain any weight after taking lot of supplements. I gained temporarily weight but after some months I again lost it. Then I consult a doctor and he said it might be because of genetic conditions. I do not want to believe this and want to gain weight anyhow. I am doing 3 shifts job. Please suggest me routine, time table and diet for weight gain. Thank you.

Editors Note

As you have already consulted with your doctor, it means medically you are fit.

Yoga practice will normalise your metabolism and balance various hormones. Now here are four things that matter:

~ Your lifestyle (Proper Rest, Relaxation and Reduced Stress Levels)
~ Exercise
~ Diet

You need to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Take adequate sleep and ensure you get proper rest and relaxation. This is important as you are working in shifts.

Yoga as an exercise is sufficient for your fitness. However, you can supplement yoga with weight training to get a more muscular body.

Eat healthy. Get diet advice from a dietician based on your eating preferences, nature of work and regional preferences.

Eat, work and be happy.

All the best.

Yoga To Gain Weight
by: Anonymous

Hello Sir

I am male of age 20 years, height 6ft. Eight months ago, my weight was 57.5 kgs. But when I got the problem of ulcerative colitis, I suffered weight loss of 9 kgs.

Currently my weight is 48.5kgs. Now my colitis has been under control to some extent and I'm not allowed to eat any junk food and high fat and excess protein rich foods.

From last 6 months my weight is stable at 48.5kgs.
I look very skinny. I have been told to stop my gym as well. Please guide me with some good diet, yoga exercises and surya namaskars as I desperately need to gain some weight and mass on my body. Please help me.

Thank you.

Editors Note

You can adopt a simple yoga sequence of one hour duration. Start your yoga practice with 6 surya namaskars and gradually increase these to 12 and then up to 24.

It is advisable that you consult a dietician and obtain a diet plan which can provide you with adequate nutrition from easily digestible food items like fruits, vegetable juices, fresh fruit juices, green vegetables and sprouts etc. Ensure that your diet include sufficient protein.

While cooking food, use least amount of oil. For best nutrition and easy digestion you may eat boiled food without any frying etc.

I am Underweight
by: Anonymous

I am 21 year old girl. I am facing the same problem of being underweight. My current weight is 43 kg. I have read your articles. It is really inspiring to know that practicing yoga can make a person gain right weight.

I want to know what is the correct sequence of yoga. Since I have to go to my college, I never get time to practice any exercise. Please tell me, when should I practice it?

Can practicing surya namaskar (sun salutation) alone help me gaining right weight?

Editors Note
You can choose any yoga sequence based on time available and the asanas which you can comfortably do. You can practice yoga early in the morning or in the evening.

Practice of surya namaskar alone can also be beneficial as it will strengthen various body organs and improve digestion. Also eat healthy nutritious diet.

3. Eat healthy nutritious diet and if required consult a yoga teacher, ayurveda doctor or a dietician to work out a diet based on your body type and temperament.

4. Take adequate rest and sleep. Do yoga practice for an hour or so for strengthening your body. A regular yoga practice with healthy diet will make you to gain weight.

5. Remember, good health/ fitness is much more important than worrying over the weight. With proper exercise and diet you will gain weight. Weight gain seems to be much more easier than losing weight.

Therefore reduce stress in life, do yoga asanas and pranayama, enjoy life without worrying over weight.

Hope this helps

Unable To Gain Weight
by: Anonymous

Hello

I am 22yr old and my height is 162cm, weight is 40 kg consistently with high metabolism. I have been doing yoga, swimming past 3 years making me blame it for unable to weight gain. Hogging on food every 2 hours kept me crave more, still no difference to my weight. Whenever, I go to meet my family or relatives, they only advise 'gain weight' with various tips(whew). Being a chef, its really humorous having a skinny figure working among well built people.

After reading this article, I would like to give it a shot once again. But somewhere I am still anxious.

P.S.- I think a lot. Is there diet chart which can quickly help gain or should I opt for capsules. Thanks for the article.

Editors Note

1. There is no need to take any medicine for weight gain without seeking medical advice. You can consult your doctor to rule out any medical condition which can prevent weight gain.

2. Eat healthy nutritiou diet and learn yoga under guidance of a yoga teacher. With yoga you can expect to gain weight. In addition, you will get more stregth, flexibility and balance which most of the people lack.

3. Think more about fitness.

Hope this helps.

Suggest me something for weight gain
by: Anonymous

Hello

I am 23 year old girl and my weight is only 35kg. I am very sad about this. Sometimes I feel shy to go outside. I was thinking to try weight gain medicines but as you are saying here that I can gain weight by yoga too. So I am going to try this. Please suggest me some pranayams or any yoga name which can help me to gain weight. Are kapalbhati & alom vilom any weight loser pranayams?

I will wait for your answer.

Thanks.

Editors Note

I will suggest the following:

1. There is no need to take any medicine for weight gain without seeking medical advice. You can consult your doctor to rule out any medical condition which can prevent weight gain.

2. Eat healthy nutritiou diet and do yoga, you will definitely gain weight. It will be advisable to learn yoga under guidance of a yoga teacher.

3. Do not think of doing a few asanas for weight gain. Your yoga sequence must include asanas, pranayama, relaxation and meditation.

4. Yoga practice will normalise your weight and you will get more inner strength, inner peace to face the world. Focus on strength and fitness rather than your weight.

Some things just happen...
by: Anonymous

Hi,

I too was quite underweight when I began yoga. I began a 40 day hot box challenge at about 53kg, and at the end of the challenge I weighed about 55/56kg and felt strong and terrific. I cannot pinpoint my weight gain down to muscle bulking/ increased metabolism and therefore food intake/ or to relaxed mindset and balancing of internal bodily systems, but either way I now feel fantastic, my skin and hair glows, and my sports performance outside of yoga have improved considerably!

Don't think about the 'weight' just enjoy the practice for what it is, and all else slips into balance :)

Gaining Weight Through Yoga
by: Anonymous

I was underweight, 173 cm tall and had 50 kilos till 26 years old. I always had a good nutrition and even sometimes ate too much. I guess my digestion was always too fast. I always wanted to gain weight but i could never manage that no matter how much i ate. Then i started practicing yoga (not because of my weight or shape of my body, simple because it started to interest me) and more I did my practicing, more I liked it. I got yoga addict :-).

After few months of yoga practice, I started to gain weight. Now after a year of practicing, I weigh 58 kilo's and feel great. Yoga even solved some of my medical problems. I think it simply balances your body and soul, so you get the best shape of both!

I got this 8 kilos in about 6 months and my weight is now consistent.

So I recommend yoga to everyone but firstly to make your life richer and to "relax your living", and everything else will come to balance.

Thanks Daljit for the motivation. Even I get tired of hearing that you have become so thin after starting yoga and in some time going to disappear.

But your views have really boosted my confidence and carry on with yoga. Its GREAT!

Thanks for your kind words. Weight loss needs firm determination and self control. However, there are various methods to lose weight. But if you do not adopt healthy eating and strict discipline in eating and regular exercise, the weight lost will come back sooner or later.

Misconception about Yoga
by: shruthy Ashok

Hello, I am 26 year old and I weigh just 42 kgs. I totally understand that I am underweight but I really want to start practicing yoga. As I believe that yoga helps reduce stress and will also help me to remain fit in years to come.

But why is that whenever I mention to people that I want to go to yoga class they start laughing and they start making fun of me. They say you are already like this, you will disappear once you start doing yoga. Is this true??

Whatever I have read about yoga is people with extra fat tend to shed it when they practice yoga. Isn't it advisable for people like me to go for yoga classes?

Hope to get a meaningful answer from you.

Thanks

Regards
Shruthy

Yoga practice does not depend on your body weight. Even if you are underweight, yoga practice will not make you disappear.

Those people who are discouraging you may not be knowing much about yoga. Doing yoga will make you strong physically and mentally and provide you with life long good health. First learn yoga poses and pranayama and then start with meditation. This can save you from many lifestyle diseases by boosting your physical and mental health.

Have you seen some lean and thin yogis? These people have great physical and mental strength. Try to maintain any yoga pose for more than a minute and you will realise that doing yoga is not possible without physical strength, will power, regular practice and mental toughness.

I suggest you must do yoga and do not worry about weight. Yoga practice along with healthy eating will help you to gain weight too.

Hope this helps.

Daljit
