Pranayama And Aerobic Exercise

by Anonymous

Hello. I am a 55 years old woman. I practice Anulom-Vilom and Kapalbhati for about 10 minutes each. On some days, I bike outside for an hour(low speed), followed by the Pranayama. My question is does the sequence matter? First bike, then Pranayama? Is it beneficial or harmful?

Thanks.

Answer

There is no harm in doing any exercise like walking or cycling before doing yoga or pranayama. Just take 5 to 10 minutes to cool down after your cycling before doing yoga.

Your cycling will burn calories and warm up your body. Thereafter doing pranayama will be beneficial as it relaxes the mind and body and provides you vital energy. You can add few easy yoga poses before pranayama for more benefit.

You can do yoga and any other exercise you love. You must not do any exercise after yoga/ pranayama. First do your cycling and then do yoga. Alternatively, you can do yoga in morning and any other exercises in the evening and vice versa.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards
Daljit

Pranayam

I believe that body naturally wants to keep heart rate up to metabolize toxins and lactic acid built up during intense work out. So I feel that doing Pranayama immediately after intense aerobic work out will act against nature by dropping the heart rate and interfere with oxygen recovery.
Doing it before aerobic work out or after a long gap of few hours should not cause any harm.
