Can I do anulom vilom alone without doing other pranayamas? How long should I do it if doing it alone and how many times?

Answer:
It is possible to do alom vilom alone without doing any other pranayama. But unless you have any other health problems, it is essential that you do pranayama followed by asanas. If a person is weak or not able to do any other asana or pranayama, practice of alom vilom can be done.

Start with a session of 5 minutes to 10 minutes. Over a period of say a few months you can increase the duration to 30 minutes. You can practice for more duration, as your practice grows. But remember do not force the pace, do as much as you can do comfortably.

It will be more beneficial if after alom vilom pranayama, you do omkar chanting for 5-10 minutes followed by 5 minutes rest in shavasana.

Follow these Guidelines for pranayama and Precautions for pranayama practice

Hope this helps.

With warm regards.

Doubt Regarding Anulom Vilom Pranayama
by: Anonymous

Can Anulom Vilom pranayama be done while lying or walking, relaxing as it is, or while listening music etc?

Editors Note
You should not do Anulom vilom pranayama while lying down or walking. You must do pranayama sitting in any comfortable meditative posture only. For a person who cannot sit in meditative pose, pranayama can be practiced sitting on a chair with the back and neck held straight.

It is not advisable to play any music while doing pranayama as pranayama practice needs focussing of mind on breathing in addition to the process of breathing. It is generally difficult to focus the mind, no additional disturbance should be created while practicing pranayama.

All the best.
