Pranayama and Hypertension

by Premalal

When having hypertension you are advising not to do pranayama exercise and also mention it is good for hypertension etc. I will be much thankful if you could please explain to me.

Answer
For people suffering from Hypertension, Kapalabhati, Bhastrika and Suryabhedi pranayama are prohibited. In addition, do not hold breath in any pranayama.

You can do rhythmic breathing, alom vilom or chandrabhedi pranayama. Take care of your posture while doing pranayama, your back should be straight.

Any time during pranayama practice you feel uncomfortable, discontinue pranayama and take rest in shavasana.

With at least half an hour of regular practice of Pranayama and appropriate diet control your blood pressure will come down.
