Query Regarding Suryabhedi Chandrabhedi and Anulom-Vilom

by Bhoomika Shah

Question:

In Suryabhedi pranayama, you have to inhale from right nostril and exhale from left nostril. Chandrabhedi pranayam is just opposite of it. Now, during Anlom-Vilom both of these happens(Inhalation from left and exhalation from right then inhalation from right and exhalation from left).

So my questions are as follows:
1. Can we practice Suryabhedi and Chandrabhedi pranayams before practicing Anulom Vilom?

2. Both the pranayams are season based, Suryabhedi to be done in winter and chandrabhedi to be done in summer, but there is no such season restriction for Anlom Vilom.

Am I going wrong with this concept? Please guide me.

Answer:

1. Your concept is correct. You can practice anulom vilom pranayama irrespective of the season. This is the most simple pranayama and can be adopted easily by people of all ages and varying health.

2. Both the pranayamas surya bhedi and chandra bhedi are season based. Suryabhedi pranayama warms up the body and hence to done in winter. Chandrabhedi pranayama cools the body and hence to be done in summer.

Hope this helps.

Daljit

Is it safe to do pranayam in winter?
by: Vishal Goyal

Hi,

Can we do pranayam in winter when cold air is blowing like at 5-8 degree temperature? Is it safe to do below pranayam?
1-Bhastrika
2-Kapal bhati
3-Anulom Vilom

Editors Note
Yes you can do pranayama in winter but do not do pranayama outside where air temperature is low or cold winds are blowing. If outside temperature is very low, do pranayama indoors. Slightly open a window for adequate ventilation.

Hope it helps

Pranayam with the left hand
by: Spiritual Quest

Hello, due to a fracture, I can use only my left hand for the time being. I usually do anulom vilom with right hand. I would like to know which fingers to use from the left hand to close which nostril.

I know that each finger represent an element. So, I am wondering if we can really do anulom vilom the opposite way, that is blocking the chandra nadi with the left thumb (fire element) and the surya nadi with the two middle finger (ether and earth element)?

Editors Note
Yes you can use your left hand using the same fingers. In this case the thumb and fingers will block the opposite nostril.

Hope it helps

anulom vilom for left handed
by: Anonymous

Can a left handed person practice anulom vilom by closing left nostril first and breathing through right or is necessary to practice it by closing right nostril first with right hand to get its benefits?

Editors Note

There is no difference for right or left handed for anulom vilom practice. You should start the anulom vilom by closing right nostril first and breathing through the left nostril.

Namaste

When one inhales, chest expands due to air filling in but stomoch goes away from spine slighly. Also when one exhales, chest collapses but stomach is pulled in towards spine slightly. Is what is written above is true for Anulaom vilom? Let me know please
